What to know

Before you fly to New York.

Teterboro (TEB), 12 miles from Midtown, is the default for private flights into New York — 30 to 60 minutes to Manhattan depending on traffic. Westchester County (HPN) is the better choice for Greenwich, the Connecticut shore and the northern suburbs, and is often less congested. LaGuardia and JFK accept private aircraft and suit Queens, Long Island or an airline connection, but come with tighter ramp space and higher fees.

The flight is about 2,450 miles. Eastbound, a super-midsize jet makes it nonstop comfortably in most conditions. Westbound in winter, strong headwinds can stretch the return past six hours, and with a full cabin and bags some super-midsize aircraft need a short fuel stop. A heavy jet flies nonstop both ways with margin. Your advisor checks the forecast winds and your passenger and bag count before recommending one or the other.

FAQ

Los Angeles to New York: questions

How long is a private flight from Los Angeles to New York?

Usually about 4 hours 45 minutes to 5 hours 15 minutes eastbound, and longer westbound when winter headwinds are strong. Your advisor gives you a flight time based on the aircraft and the forecast winds for your date.

Do I need a heavy jet to fly Los Angeles to New York nonstop?

Not usually. A super-midsize jet such as a Challenger 350 flies it nonstop in most conditions. A heavy jet adds margin for the westbound return in winter, a larger group or a lot of luggage.

Which New York airport should I fly into?

Teterboro for Manhattan, Westchester (HPN) for Greenwich and the northern suburbs, and LaGuardia or JFK when you are heading to Queens or Long Island or connecting to an airline flight.
